GEMINI Model – Ruth B

Writer – Leah H

I am excited to feature one of GEMINI Model’s lifestyle models, Ruth Brighton, in this month’s blog.   I had the opportunity to talk with her about her exciting modelling career and a recent international commercial.

  • Tell us about yourself.   What do you like to do outside of modelling?

I love spending quality time with my family and friends.  I frequently enjoy dinner and a movie with friends as well as the occasional trip to the casino.  Although I consider myself a homebody, I do enjoy travelling and am excited to be vacationing in Costa Rica next month.  A lot of quality time is spent with my son’s female boxer Ruca.

  • What got you started in modelling and how long have you been modelling for?

I started modelling about 5 years ago.  I had lost my job at a local insurance company, went back to college where I graduated at the age of 55.  While pondering my next endeavour, I noticed an ad in the local newspaper advertising a model and talent search.  I thought to myself, what do I have to lose.  As fate would have it, I was picked up by an Agency in Mississauga.  Soon afterward, I met with Laurie from GEMINI and ended up signing with them as well.  Laurie encouraged me to participate in a model and talent competition in London where I placed first in my age category.  I am now represented by three Agencies: GEMINI Models, Sherrida Models, and The Agency in London.

  • Can you tell me about some of the work you have done in 2012?

I have participated in many fashion shows, including Wedding Dreams Bridal shows and A Blooming Affair.  I also appear frequently on the Shopping Channel as a stand-in fashion model.  As well, I am a Fit Model for Sears.  2012 also saw me landing my first international commercial with a company called Optifog.  Last but not least, I was fortunate in being selected to appear in the Wedding Dreams Magazine as a BRIDE!  That was VERY special for me.

  •  What can you tell me about this experience?  What was it like being on set while they were shooting this commercial?

It was really cool!  Although there were only three key players, there were between 30 and 40 people working behind the scenes to make the commercial an amazing one. It was neat to see what everyone’s role was and how they all worked together to pull it off.  I was amazed at how quickly it came together!

  • Can you tell us more about that? Where is the commercial airing?

Optifog decided to extend the airing dates until the end of November 2013.  It’s an international commercial airing extensively in Europe.  It has also been spotted in Canada on the TV guide and in the cinemas.

  • We will have to keep our eyes open to spot your commercial. Have you ever done any acting in the past?

I don’t have much acting experience but I have done many infomercials…. Pill Valet being one of them.  I recently acted in a Casino Rama commercial.  That one hasn’t aired yet.  Hopefully later this year.

  • Looks like you have been very busy. Was the commercial your favourite job so far?

It is definitely one of my favourites but I have to say my absolute favourite was being featured on the cover of MOST Magazine.  I never imagined, at the age of 61, being featured on the cover of a magazine!  I owe a HUGE thank you to Audrey at GEMINI Models, who has been behind all of my modelling successes in the Kitchener – Waterloo area.  I am so grateful for all of her and Laurie’s help.

  • You look absolutely gorgeous on the cover. Can you tell us some of your goals for 2013?

I would really like to book more commercials.  I am aiming to book at least 2 commercials in 2013.  To accomplish this goal I have been paying extra close attention to the actors in commercials in hopes of improving my skills.  There are classes frequently running in Toronto for this very purpose.  I will likely enroll in one of those.  I would also love to meet the actress in the Tim Horton’s commercial – the one who walks to a microwave, turns around and comments on the other ladies lunch soup.  I’ve seen her in a number of commercials and have always wanted to meet and chat with her.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.  Is there anything you would like to leave us with?

After losing my job and going back to school, I wasn’t sure where I would end up.  Throughout my life I never thought that I would ever become a model.  I recall as a young girl looking through catalogues and magazines dreaming of becoming a model and I never thought it was possible.  And here I am!  So if there is one phrase of inspiration I can leave you with, it would be to follow your dreams.

  • You are such an inspiration to myself and many others.  Thank you for sharing your story and best of luck with your 2013 goals!
